Photography
Long has photography been debated as an art form. Does it count, when the sum of artistic labor can amount to ‘point and shoot’? I say yes, for a couple of reasons. First, it’s not always that simple. Anyone steeped in the history and technical process of photography will tell you that it is far deeper than merely capturing an image. Cameras do not always capture what the human eye or mind does, and it takes editing to bring that through. And in any case, photography brings a single moment witnessed by one person to a whole crowd, preserving a moment for eternity. Or until the grid collapses. But there is more. Nature itself is a rolling, ever-changing, powerful act of art and creation in and of itself. She has all the elements of art; composition, contrast, lighting, spectrums of saturation. To witness it at all is a miracle. To capture it? Sublime. To share, one step closer to divinity. Good photography invites you to slow down, to look more closely, to experience life on a scale our everyday frequently does not allow for. “Look, gaze upon what I have seen, and witness this moment with me.” All of life is passing moments. How pleasant to sit and savor a single one.
